Youth Places mission is to ensure that underserved, high risk youth ages 12 – 18 engage in quality afterschool programs within their own neighborhood that are shaped by the community and youth leaders in order to develop the skills of youth and increase their opportunity for success. Youth Places origin is directly connected to the work of the Youth Crime Prevention Council, established in 1994 by the US Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania. The purpose was to reverse the rising tide of youth crime and violence in communities throughout Allegheny County. Funding is received from Allegheny County Department of Human Services and administered by Youth Places. Youth Places presented a Peace on Our Streets Poetry Slam February 2012 at the Shadow Lounge located in East Liberty. Youth collected poems and lyrics from popular WRAP groups, printed it in a Manuel and recited it in public. Also presented were guest speakers, refreshments and prizes.
